PURPOSE OF THE APPLICATION:
NetDir is a simple Web Browser helper application that plugs easily into Netscape 1.0+ or other Web Browser applications that allow for "plug-in" utility applications. When "plugged in" with Netscape, NetDir will allow the user to open and play cross-platform Macromedia Director files after downloading over the World Wide Web using a compatible web browser. NetDir was designed as a universal and cross-platform (PC->Mac, Mac->PC) tool capable of playing any Macromedia Director (4.0+) file developed either on PC or Mac (much in the way Apple's MoviePlayer application works for opening and playing QuickTime movies).
INSTALLATION:
To install a working copy of NetDir into your favorite web browser, first follow the instructions provided in your web browser's (Netscape's) help manual (online help) on how to plug in "helpers" or helper applications. Usually, helpers are plugged in by opening the General Preferences menu or menu item located within the menu bar of your browser.
After you have opened the Helper applications' window, plug in NetDir as a "New" MIME Helper Application. Then type in a MIME Name in the MIME Name field called "director" which stands for Director Files, and in the Extension Type field, type in ".dir, .dxr", which are extension types that stand for the two most common types of director files created with Macromedia Director.
HOW TO USE NETDIR:
After you have installed NetDir into your web browser, NetDir will launch automatically whenever you download a standard Director file with the extension ".dir" (or ".dxr"). Since Director files vary in their design and development structure, NetDir is launched into the foreground of your Open applications (web browser included) to give you the option to open your newly downloaded Director file or previously downloaded director file.
In this development version of NetDir, you are able, under the "File" menu, to "open" and "close" director files, and, on Macs, view director files with "presentation mode" on or off. "Presentation Mode" when turned on hides the Macintosh Desktop with a black backdrop and plays the open Director in the foreground.
